The Wilderness Test
The Wilderness Walk of the exodus from Egypt was so The Lord could test character and humble people for the purpose of obedience.
When Jesus went into the wilderness after being baptized, he was also tested.
He did this to teach people how to respond to the temptations of the enemy. These (3) temptations are the same ones the enemy tempts all people, still today. Jesus taught us how to fight back and also gave us his Holy Spirit of power to use as he will fight the battle for you from inside of you through the Spirit.
These are the scriptures that Jesus used when he fought back against the enemy when he was tempted.
Temptations of Jesus (3)
Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.
1. Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.
He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Deuteronomy 8:3
2. Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.”
Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”
Multiple Scriptures:
You must fear the Lord your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name. Deuteronomy 6:13
Then Samuel said to all the people of Israel, “If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; 1 Samuel 7:3
You must fear the Lord your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. Deuteronomy 10:20
“You must not have any other god but me. Exodus 20:3 (This is the 1st Commandment of the 10 Commandments)
3. Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, 'He will order his angels to protect and guard you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.”
Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.
You must not test the Lord your God as you did when you complained at Massah. Deuteronomy 6:16
Reference: “Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?” But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”
Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What should I do with these people? They are ready to stone me!” The Lord said to Moses, “Walk out in front of the people. Take your staff, the one you used when you struck the water of the Nile, and call some of the elders of Israel to join you. I will stand before you on the rock at Mount Sinai. Strike the rock, and water will come gushing out. Then the people will be able to drink.” So Moses struck the rock as he was told, and water gushed out as the elders looked on.
Moses named the place Massah (which means “test”) and Meribah (which means “arguing”) because the people of Israel argued with Moses and tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord here with us or not?”
The evil one is slick and very deceiving if you do not know the Word – The Sword of the Spirit to fight back with. Jesus, The Risen Lord was tempted and used scripture to fight off the enemy.
